YOUR IDEA INTO A PRODUCT

Often the goal of an image recognition product is clear, but the road towards the realisation of this product is not. Studio diip can cover the variety of disciplines necessary to make the step from an inspiring idea to an implemented product by going through the different phases of the development process.

To see the phases of this process see about.
INTEGRATING IMAGE RECOGNITION

A camera is one of the most sensitive sensors there is, as long as it is possible to get the right information from it. Studio diip has the ability to add the power of image recognition technology to existing products or to embed it as a module in a developing product.

Read more about the implementing technology in the skills section.
PROTOTYPING AN EXPERIENCE

The addition of vision to a product or system can make a big difference in the effectiveness, usability and capabilities. Studio diip is able to quickly create convincing prototypes to see the effects of implementing image recognition in a product to investigate a new area, test different possibilities or communicate an idea.

See an example prototype in a project.
FORMING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Image recognition is a specialized area, but it works best when it is combined with a different specialized market. A good way to develop new products or systems is to combine our expertise in developing image recognition product with the expertise of other companies their own market to form a strategic partnership.

More about this in our approach.
ABOUT

Studio diip started in 2010 with as goal to design products that make use of image recognition technology. The first project was developing the Bridge Card Reader in order to automate the broadcasting of bridge matches to reach a wider audience. By now we use our expertise in image recognition and skills in product design to deliver custom image recognition products for our clients while we continue to develop our own products.
VISION

At Studio diip we firmly believe that image recognition products can serve as a more natural way of interacting with technology around us. Whether it is gathering information to allow a greater audience for a sport or the optimisation of Industrial processes we aim to keep things easy for the people that use our products on a day to day basis.
APPROACH

Next to the people we create products for we also wish to include our clients as much as possible. As image recognition products are very dependent on their context and how they are being used we aim to work together with our clients to learn from them and the other way around. We also like the challenge of implementing imaging in difficult situations or expand our horizon by introducing the technology in new areas.
PROCESS

Developing image recognition products is a complicated task, but at the beginning it is usually very simple. It starts with an idea connected to a target group and objective. By creating a proof of concept we can quickly identify problem areas, communicate the added value of an idea and experience it directly. While prototyping we often consult the target group, client and run tests as image recognition is all about dealing with exceptions. This ensures we deliver a tested and custom made system that fits the needs of our clients.

TEAM

The team behind Studio diip has a combined background in industrial design and the development of complex intelligent systems. Studio diip consists of graduates from the Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Twente. In this education we developed knowledge in the areas of design thinking, implementing technology, usability studies and business perspective. Already within our education we worked with image recognition technology and by now we have acquired the expertise to be able to combine this technology with interesting products. Finally, our hands-on approach makes it possible to quickly turn the things we have in mind into prototypes that can be experienced.
GUUST HILTE

Guust Hilte graduated with ‘excellence’ and received a master’s degree in Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology. For his graduation he designed and developed a product that focused on providing an alternative to text entry on mobile devices which generated a lot of media attention. Guust also has experience in starting, running and then selling his own webhosting company. With an expertise in combining technology and product design Guust started Studio diip and now tends to focus more on the technological aspects next to running the company.
THOMAS DE WOLF

Thomas de Wolf graduated with a product that was able to learn by watching its surroundings with image recognition. He received his master’s degree in Industrial Design with this project at the Eindhoven University of Technology. This and earlier projects sparked an interest in image recognition and learning systems which in turn led to starting Studio diip. Next to his education Thomas has specialized in business processes and start-ups. Within Studio diip Thomas is more active in the communica-tion to the outside next to running the company.
ROGIER KAUW-A-TJOE

Rogier Kauw-A-Tjoe focused his graduation project on the development of an autonomous outdoor cleaning robot and received his master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering at the University of Twente. Within this project he combined the areas of image recognition, software development and mechanical and electrical engineering as a system designer. He also received a master's degree in Interaction Design from Domus Academy in Milan. Rogier is specialized in mapping the relationships between all the components within projects and is a designer of intelligent systems at Studio diip.
PROJECTS: BCR

The Bridge Card Reader (BCR) is an automated bridge card identification and broadcasting system. In short BCR sends bidding and playing information from bridge tournament tables to the internet and gathers detailed information for referees.

More in-depth information about the Bridge Card Reader can be found at bridgecardcreader.com
INTEGRATED PRODUCT

The Bridge Card Reader is a product developed internally at Studio diip and shows the effectiveness of developing a product when looking at it from different perspectives. It shows the capabilities of Studio diip to design a complete product and system, develop the necessary software, implement and test it with the players that use the system and develop a profitable business model behind it.
INTERNATIONAL USE

The Bridge Card Reader consists of a computer connected to cameras and various other components to make automatic detection possible. The system is developed and tested with the World Bridge Federation and it has been used at the World Bridge Championships in 2011. Currently Studio diip continues to develop BCR to make it possible to one day broadcast all international bridge tournaments without the need of manual operators.

INDUSTRIAL POSITIONING

For a manufacturer of industrial equipment Studio diip has developed a proof of concept. This proof of concept showcases the possibilities of detecting the position of material with sub millimetre precision. For this project Studio diip has selected Industrial grade cameras and lenses and will deliver a module that takes care of the image recognition that can be embedded in the existing software. This project is currently under NDA.
AUTOMATIC NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION

Studio diip has developed an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) proof of concept. Of course there are many commercially available ANPR systems now, but Studio diip has the ability to create one that fits very specific needs in this case for a logistics company. The ongoing development of this project is under NDA and more information will be released later.
PROOF OF CONCEPT

To investigate number plate recognition and the development of a specific system for a client Studio diip gathered video footage of passing cars and created a program that is able to extract license plates. The combination of program and movie file helped us to identify possible problem areas, get to know the hardware and show the possibilities of the technology to the client.
INDUSTRIAL PERFORMANCE

Some projects require higher performance and the use of professional hardware that can be relied on. For these projects Studio diip has the expertise to select the right camera’s, lenses, processing hardware and software to deliver an efficient end product.
PRODUCT ECOSYSTEMS

A new product or innovation is more than just a piece of hardware. In many cases an innovation is a collection of several components and services. At Studio diip we attempt to develop all these aspects around a new product in house. Whether it is developing the necessary webservice, a manual or calibration equipment we can take care of the complete product ecosystem.
PLATFORM INDEPENDENT

Different projects have different requirements when it comes to the software. Studio diip can integrate image recognition functionality on most operating systems, a variety of programming languages or connect to existing software in many ways. This ensures that the end result will always ask for a minimum adjustment of the current situation so we can truly deliver custom made image recognition.
LOW-COST HARDWARE

Especially for projects that require the implementation of only a small amount of products it can be interesting to rely on consumer electronic hardware. Studio diip is able to make use of standard components like webcams and existing computers or existing cameras to keep the hardware investments low while still achieving great results.
